摘要
replacement crystalline naturally blocks the transmittance of ultraviolet light (UV).[1] To achieve light transmittance pattern similar to a crystalline lens, the are modified by incorporating different filters to block (300-400 nm), violet (400-440 nm), or UV blue (400-500 nm) These modified IOLs are claimed to protect the retina photochemical damage by UV light and improve the quality of vision as well as life.[2,3] But the popular hypothesis phototoxicity age-related macular degeneration and retinal photoprotection by modified IOLs has not been conclusively proven with level 5 evidence[4-7] The relation between light and retinal photo perception is complex and is not fully understood. daylight vision from the transmitted spectrum, the human macula specifically absorbs light of wavelengths 420 nm, 450 nm, nm, using three designated visual pigments located in different types of cone cells for executing three different functions. While for night vision, the rod cell uses a light spectrum of wavelength 400-500 nm and high-energy blue falls within this range.[8] Blue light influences melatonin secretion of the pineal gland and thus plays a regulatory role human circadian cycle and biology.[2,3] In a recent study, wide sensitivity of the mammalian eye to UV light has been Department of Ophthalmology, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati, Assam, India Correspondence to: Dr. Suklengmung Buragohain, Sri Sankaradeva age. Progressive yellowing change spectral transmittance and decay in total light transmittance are thought to be age-dependent changes but without good established correlation.[1,8,10-14] With time, the implanted IOLs also exhibit changes like opacification, glistening, increase in light scattering, and snowflake degeneration.[15-17] One study has also documented electron microscopic evidence of biodegradation of IOLs, explanted after a prolonged period of implantation.[15] Moreover, the exact nature of visual stimuli in the pseudophakic eye is not yet known.[18] UV-Vis spectroscopy is widely used in research for investigating spectral transmittance data in laboratory settings.[19] With the increase in human life expectancy, these IOLs are going to stay for progressively longer period of time in the eye. In situ time-dependent degradation of the implanted hydrophobic IOL can occur even with the IOL remaining transparent, causing degradation of the spectral transmittance across it and resulting in subsequent adverse effects to the patient.
