Combination of endoluminal and external vacuum-assisted closure system in management of complicated anastomotic leak after esophageal resection – a case report

Aims Esophageal leakage of postoperative esophagogastrostomy is considered a life-threatening condition due to the possible development of mediastinitis. The technique of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) is an established method in treatment of infected surgical wounds, but also has been used endoscopically to heal intraluminal leaks. In this case report, we present a successful use of combined rendezvous external and endoluminal VAC therapy of a large postoperative anastomotic leak with mediastinitis after esophageal resection.
