Production of microbial carotenoid using innate inherent of the food industry wastewater

•Rhodotorula mucilaginosa SML is used in the conjoint process of bioremediation and carotenoid production.•Over 95 % of COD and BOD were removed in food industry wastewater bioremediation using innate yeast cells.•The batch study yielded a maximum carotenoid content (810 µg/g) with glucose supplement.•The combination of methanol and ultrasonication showed higher carotenoid recovery than the other organic solvents.
