Identification and characterization of diabetes subtypes in the Kiel population-based FoCus cohort

Background and Aim In the sense of personalized diabetes treatment, Ahlqvist et al. initially defined 5 subtypes of adult-onset diabetes with different risk profiles using a data-driven cluster analysis with clinical patient data. Ever since, subtypes were consistently reproduced and further assessed. However, the role of nutrition - gut microbiota - host metabolism interactions remains mostly unknown. Therefore, our aim was to apply comparable subtyping to the Kiel FoCus cohort for the evaluation of this important metabolic axis.
