Abstract Improving the dynamic properties and reducing the vibration levels is extremely important for the design of many engineering structures. In this paper, we develop a dynamic topology optimization program based on parallel computing with the help of the PETSc Portable Extension Toolkit for Scientific Computing and the MPI communication protocol. The SIMP model is used as the topology optimization model, and the sensitivity analysis schemes of the dynamic compliance and displacement response as opposed to the density design variables are given in the paper. Using this optimization formulation, we developed a parallel topology optimization program for minimizing the transient response. The convergence performance of the program is shown with a relatively large-scale numerical example.
