ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is linked to high levels of mortality and morbidity. In this chapter we cover the different aspects of STEMI. The risk factors for STEMI are variable, and the pathophysiology of plaque formation and platelet aggregation is complex. Clinical presentation is not always straightforward, and diagnosis depends on solid criteria but not always easy. Treatment consists of medical and interventional strategies. Prognostic tools have been developed but still not very solid.
