Tetraphenylethene derivatives with adjustable molecular geometry emerge as an attractive paradigm for the development of smart and versatile chemical probes. In this Review, the configuration-dependent molecular recognition, aggregation-induced emission and bioactivities of cis/trans tetraphenylethene-based isomers are summarized. Facilitated by the unique properties, their applications in fluorescence detection, bioimaging and targeted therapy are discussed. For more information, see the Review by D. Zhang et al.
