Routine Postoperative Day 1 Dismissal Following Endonasal Surgery for Pituitary Adenoma: A Single-Institution Cohort Study

Introduction: Early dismissal following uncomplicated endonasal resection of pituitary adenoma has been described as safe and feasible. Dismissal on postoperative day 1 (POD1) is standard practice at our institution, though is not widely accepted in the United States. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of POD1 dismissals compared with postoperative day 2 or later (POD2+) by comparing the rates of postoperative unplanned medical care between the two cohorts. We hypothesized lower unplanned postoperative medical care rates for POD1 patients.
