Synthesis of Nitroso, Nitro, and Related Compounds

Methods to synthesize nitro-compounds and nitroso-compounds are reviewed in this chapter. The synthesis of nitro-compounds is divided into three categories: (1) direct addition of a nitro-group to a molecule through nitration of a C–H bond or through the interconversion of a functional group; (2) strategies and tactics for the synthesis of nitro-substituted molecules from building blocks that contain a nitro-group; and (3) molecular editing to convert nitro-substituted N-heterocycles into valuable molecules through transannulation. The synthesis of nitroso-compounds is summarized by examining methods for introduction the nitroso-group through nitrosation of a C–H bond or through functional group transformation. The oxidation of amines, reduction of nitroarenes, and the development of photochemical reactions to construct C-nitroso compounds are also summarized.
