The etiology of Wilson-Mikity syndrome (WMS) remains uncertain. Inflammation of the fetal lung caused by intrauterine infection spilling over into the lungs results in lung tissue collapse and birth before complete repair is achieved. Continued spontaneous breathing exacerbates lung damage that results in the development of chronic lung disease.
