•β-cyclodextrin modified Mn3O4 was synthesized through mechanochemistry.•Mn3O4@β-CD could activate peroxymosulfate through electron transfer process.•Surface reactive PMS* complex played dominated role in the degradation of BPA.•β-CD could accelerate electron transfer by promoting surface adsorption.•Mn3O4@β-CD/PMS obtained higher utilization of PMS and adaptability in real water.
