The review states that “following a systematic protocol should lead to favorable outcome 90% of the time.” However, other reviews suggest that more than 40% of patients with chronic cough presenting to specialty cough centers are without a diagnosis.2 Moreover, idiopathic chronic cough has been described as a distinct clinical entity without a pathologic explanation or defined treatment.3 Frustration is therefore all too common among clinicians faced with a patient who has chronic cough but no explanation despite careful evaluation and therapeutic trials.
