摘要
Human rhinoviruses (HRV) are ubiquitous pathogens and the leading cause of the common cold syndrome. HRV are very diverse, with more than 160 genotypes identified which cause disease in persons of all ages, with the highest incidence documented in young children. Although the illness is typically mild and self-limited, lost time from work and school creates a considerable economic burden. Infection of the upper airways is the most common site of infection. However, lower airway disease is also well documented, as is the link between HRV infection and asthma exacerbations. Unfortunately, effective specific antiviral treatments and vaccines remain elusive.
