Toward Data Lake Technologies for Intelligent Societies and Cities

This work discusses the general importance of data lakes and their applications in sustainable smart cities. We present the most common data lake architectures, such as the zone architecture and the data pond architecture and also discuss data processing and analysis technologies in the mentioned context. We hope that the contents of this work can provide insights for data engineers, scientists, analysts, and decision-makers in the various stages of developing a data-driven application. As an additional contribution, we also present a general discussion on cognitive bias and how decision-makers can mitigate it or use it in their favor. Finally, our initial endeavors provide a data lake architecture to integrate government applications from Alagoas state, Brazil, in which we demonstrate a search result for the geographic distribution of the users in the systems integrated based on the proposed architecture.
