An Integrated Analytics of PEM Electrolyzer and Steel Making

It is widely accepted that the hydrogen-water couple can elevate the green economy circuit if powered by renewable sources of energy. Proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) being a clean electrochemical device is expected to provide an amenable solution to the hydrogen-water nexus and act as an enabler to achieving decarbonization of the steel-making industry. In this work, we throw light on the performance of a PEMWE that feeds target hydrogen volumes to a direct iron ore reduction process. The response of the electrolyzer under the presence of a host of operational stressors and variable electricity input is delineated through a macroscale modeling framework. The techno-economics associated with specific energy consumption of the downstream steel-making pathways will be further discussed based on insights from a process cost model.
