Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be rarely out of the news. It has also quietly entered classrooms, with ‘intelligent’, ‘adaptive’, and ‘personalised’ Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) systems increasingly being deployed in schools and universities around the world. Accordingly, like AI in general, AIED raises far-reaching ethical questions with important implications for students, educators, parents, and other stakeholders. The 5P framework consolidates six of the most prominent proposals for ethical AI: the Asilomar AI principles, the Montreal Declaration of Responsible AI, and the IEEE General Principles, plus the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies principles for Ethical AI, the UK House of Lords AI code, and the Tenets of the Partnership on AI. This introduction also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
