Dyslipidemia

Lipoproteins play a major role in the metabolism of all types of tissues and are critical for normal function of various organs such as liver, brain, and heart muscle. On the other hand, abnormal handling of lipoprotein metabolism contributes to atherosclerotic changes in the vascular endothelium and serious conditions such as cardiovascular events. In recent decades, better understanding of lipid metabolism has led to the development of effective medications that have significantly changed blood lipid profile and outcome of patients. The field is continuously evolving and novel approaches such as gene therapy are expected to result in major new breakthroughs in the near future.
