Osteoarthritis

This chapter focuses on clinical innovation in osteoarthritis (OA). We provide an updated definition of OA, outline the salient features of recently published treatment guidelines, and emphasize the importance of early-stage OA identification and the need for developing classification criteria. We also outline the challenges of conducting clinical trials that support OA drug development and discuss the contribution of biochemical (molecular) markers, imaging modalities, and computational methodologies to the ever-expanding mechanistic understanding of disease pathogenesis. We propose refinement of future OA clinical trials by patient stratification and endophenotyping.
