A discussion is presented which traces the development of the understanding of olefin hydrogenation on heterogeneous catalysts from the basic Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism, through the proposed analogies with homogeneous catalysts to the consideration of the atomic arrangements of various types of surface sites and the application of organometallic reaction principles to rationalize product formation,
