•Dynamic characteristics of refrigerant and lubricating oil were researched.•R290 LT-AWHP have different defrosting time with different oil.•Different oil has different change trend of oil sump physical properties.•μol is lower than the steady state value for a long time after defrosting.•Oil sump level drops a lot after the four-way valve reversed first time.
