Urban forests support natural regeneration of cloud forest trees and shrubs, albeit with limited occurrence of late-successional species

•Native species dominated the regeneration strata in urban forests.•Early successional species were more abundant.•The density of young tree stages increased with canopy cover.•Urban and periurban forests had similar richness and density of trees and shrubs.•Assisting the regeneration of native late-successional species is necessary.
