A linear positive relationship between tree species diversity and forest productivity across forest-dominated natural reserves on a large spatial scale

•A positive diversity-productivity relation (DPR) across natural reserves is revealed.•Ground survey and remote sensing analysis are combined to study DPR.•Ground-based indicators linked to DPR can be verified by remotely-sensed indicators.•Structural equation modeling analyses imply the key role of climate in driving DPR.
