Abstract Planc.to.my.ce.ta.ce'ae. N.L. masc. n. Planctomyces type genus of the family; ‐ aceae ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Planctomycetaceae the Planctomyces family. Planctomycetota / Planctomycetia / Planctomycetales / Planctomycetaceae The family Planctomycetaceae accommodates budding bacteria with tear‐drop to pear‐shaped, spherical to ovoid, or bulbiform cells, which may possess various multifibrillar appendages including stalks and fimbria. Cells are covered with crateriform pits that are present on a reproductive pole of mature cells or distributed over the whole cell surface. Daughter cells may be motile by means of one or two flagella. Members of this family are aerobic or facultatively anaerobic chemo‐organotrophs. Growth occurs on various sugars and polysaccharides. The type genus is Planctomyces . Representatives of the family are common inhabitants of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands. DNA G + C content (mol%) : 50.5 to 70.7 (genome sequence). Type genus : Planctomyces Gimesi 1924 AL .
