Distributed Hierarchical Control of Battery Energy Storage Cluster for Peak-load Shifting

In microgrids, renewable energies and time-varying loads usually cause power fluctuations even result in security and stability risks. In this paper, battery energy storage clusters (BESC) are used to provide ancillary services, e.g., smoothing the tie-line power fluctuations and peak-load shifting for microgrids due to their aggregated and controllable power consumptions. A distributed hierarchical control strategy is proposed to regulate the BESC to peak-load shifting. In the first layer, a novel optimization algorithm is designed to regulate the BESC to minimize the fluctuations of tie-line power. In the second layer, a distributed control algorithm is developed for each BESC to allocate the calculated power through the first layer. Finally, several simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed distributed hierarchical control strategy.
