Status and Near Future Plans for Generating Pulses with Shorter Wavelengths and Duration by the FERMI FEL

FERMI is a seeded high-gain harmonic generation free-electron laser (FEL) incorporating two FEL lines, FEL-1 and FEL-2 [1], [2]. These two lines cover the photon energy range from about 10 eV to 300 eV, making FERMI a versatile and powerful tool for a wide range of scientific applications. There are two key challenges in seeded FEL operation: extending the range to shorter wavelengths and generating shorter pulses. In the last years both have been analyzed and steps towards improvement of both aspects were made by the FERMI team. The talk will present a short review of the recent progress, including also details on the ongoing upgrades of the machine and of the seed laser system.
