Low Complexity and High Accuracy Positioning for IIoT Applications

Motivated by the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) terminals that have a demand for high positioning accuracy, this work studies a low complexity and high accuracy positioning method. To achieve high positioning accuracy for IIoT terminals with limited bandwidth capability, the intuitive way is to obtain a large bandwidth from different shots, among which frequency hopping solution is the most popular one. However, it may be difficult to perform the coherent reception due to the phase discontinuity between different hops brought by some hardware factors. To address this issue, we design an overlapped frequency hopping based positioning method, where there is an overlapped part in the frequency domain for two adjacent hops. Resorted to the overlapped parts, the random phase offset issue introduced by the frequency hopping process can be well addressed. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed solution can achieve a comparable positioning accuracy as that of a normal commercial terminal with a consecutive large transmit bandwidth, at the expense of a smaller bandwidth, which can provide some insights on reducing the cost and complexity for the IIoT terminals while satisfying the high positioning accuracy requirement.
