Comparison of Calculation Methods for the Power Cable Distributed Resistance over a Wide Frequency Range

Power cable system is an important part of the transmission and distribution system, and the broadband distributed resistance is of great significance to the power cable system fault location techniques such as broadband impedance spectroscopy (BIS). Therefore, the distributed resistance of power cable system should be accurately calculated over a wide frequency range. In this paper, the theoretical derivation and comparison of the stationary current field and the eddy current field are carried out to obtain a calculation method applicable to a wide frequency range. The eddy current field has approximate consideration of the skin effect, and the calculation methods for different frequency bands in wide frequency domain are given. Their accuracy is verified by the analytical solution and the finite element calculation method. The comparison results show that the stationary current field is only applicable to the extremely low frequency band; the eddy current field applies to broadband. All the analytical calculation methods ignore the influence of the semicon layer of the power cable on the distributed resistance, and the semicon layer has influence on the distributed resistance at high frequencies. The finite element calculation method for the eddy current field can be used to accurately calculate the broadband distributed resistance of power cable system.
