A Simple Directional Patch Antenna with High Gain for WLAN Applications

This paper presents a high-gain directional antenna, which is suitable for 2.4 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) applications. The antenna consists of a T-shaped patch etched with a rectangular slot, a rectangular ground plane, a reflector with metal strips around it. By adding symmetrical rectangular metal sheet around the antenna, the profile of the antenna can be reduced to 0.112 $\boldsymbol{\lambda}_{\mathbf{0}}$ (where $\boldsymbol{\lambda}_{\mathbf{0}}$ is the wavelength of 2.4 GHz in the free space), and the bandwidth can be expanded. This work is constructed using the finite element method based on the ANSYS HFSS software. The antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 35.4% (2.23-3.08 GHz), and the corresponding gain varies within $\mathbf{7.43}\pm \mathbf{0.02}\ \mathbf{dBi}$ . The proposed antenna with the simple and thin structure is suitable for the applications such as bluetooth and zigbee.
