Complete Decoupling of a Close Patch Antenna Pair by Manipulating the Mode Conductance with Patch Trimming

This article presents a design for closely spaced patch antenna pair with high isolation. Firstly, through characteristic mode analysis (CMA), it is shows that decoupling with loading inductance alone is incomplete. Then, a decoupling scheme of trimming the patch is proposed for the conductive coupling between antennas. By changing the trimming size, it is possible to equalize the mode conductance of the odd and even modes of the patch antenna pair, thereby achieving complete decoupling. Finally, the feasibility of this scheme is verified through full-wave simulation, and the antenna achieves up to 26.75 dB isolation at a working frequency of 2.45 GHz.
