Selection and Development of Oil-immersed Reactive Power Compensation Reactor for High Altitude UHV AC Project

With the construction of UHV AC power transmission projects, some UHV AC substations will be located in high-altitude areas in where the special natural conditions such as ultraviolet and large temperature difference will have a significant impact on the dry reactive power compensation reactor. Developing an oil-immersed reactive power compensation reactor can effectively reduce the impact of natural environment on equipment and improve the reliability. The equipment selection and technical specification of single-phase and three-phase oil immersed reactive power compensation reactor are studied, as well as the simulation calculation of electric field, magnetic field, temperature field, mechanical stress and noise to verify the feasibility of equipment manufacturing and operation. The calculation results show that the performance of the oil-immersed reactive power compensation reactor can meet the operational requirements in high-altitude areas. Finally, through technical and economic comparison, it is recommended to use the 110kV 80MVar single-phase oil-immersed compensation reactor for UHV AC substations in high-altitude areas.
