System Efficiency Model for Microgrids Using Fractional Programming

In power systems, it is crucial to improve the efficiency of the generators using optimization methods. Most of the existing studies directly optimize the efficiency function in order to minimize fuel consumption. However, to make the system more practical, an equation directly representing the fuel consumption rate should be implemented. In this paper, a sum of ratios function is formulated to minimize fuel consumption. A fractional programming approach is adopted to solve the sum of ratios problem efficiently. The proposed approach is applied to the modified IEEE 5-bus and a notional notional MVAC ship systems. The data shows that the proposed model can efficiently minimize the fuel consumption rate compared to the equal power-sharing model.
