Sustainable computing has become a critical topic in recent years due to the increasing demand for computing resources and the significant environmental impact of data centers. It aims to minimize the environmental impact of computing systems, while also meeting the growing demand for computing and storage resources. Data storage plays a crucial role in sustainable computing, as it is one of the most energy-intensive components of a data center. Hybrid cloud, which combines on-premises and public cloud resources, can be leveraged to improve the sustainability of storage. In this context, several strategies have been proposed to optimize the energy consumption of storage systems, such as data compression, deduplication, and tiered storage. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, can further reduce the carbon footprint. In this paper, we explore the opportunities of sustainable computing in storage in hybrid cloud environments, present a pragmatic approach for data placement advisory for meeting sustainable goals and discuss the potential benefits of adopting the proposed approach to meet sustainable practices in this context.
