Plasmonic Metamaterial Perfect Absorber using Hybrid Split Cross-Ring Nanostructures

Plasmonic metamaterial-based devices can enable near-perfect absorption over a broad wavelength range by tailoring the meta-atoms. Here, we show an angle-insensitive and polarization-insensitive broadband plasmonic metamaterial perfect absorber with a 97.38% average absorption over the 400–1000 nm wavelength range with an absorption peak of 99.97% at an incident wavelength of 598 nm. Incident angle-insensitivity up to 60 degrees of oblique incidence is achieved for both TE and TM polarizations. Thus, the proposed absorber could find potential applications as nanostructured optical coatings for solar thermophotovoltaic systems.
