•A study examining human parathyroid tissue cryopreserved between 60 and 185 months.•Mean percentage viable cells was significantly higher in the study group.•Most study samples demonstrated a loss of negative feedback.•The control group exhibited normal parathyroid hormone secretion regulation.•Cryopreservation had no significant effect on tissue viability or function.
