Performance Trade-off in IRS-assisted Dual-Function Radar-Communication System

This paper investigates the trade-off design problem for the dual-function radar-communication (DRC) system assisted by the intelligent reconfigurable surface (IRS). The degrees of freedom for trade-off design are the dual-functional transmit waveform and IRS reflection matrix. To begin with, subject to the transmit power, we formulate the design problem as weighted optimizations aiming for a rational tradeoff between radar and communications performance. Then, employing the use of an equivalent reformulation of the preceding design problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm that obtains the closed-form solutions. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is supported by numerical results.
