•H2 production from chemical looping gasification of MSW was explored.•ASPEN simulation model of the CLG process with continuous MSW feeding was built.•The lattice oxygen transfer process of CuFe2O4 spinel in the CLG was simulated.•The CLG model was validated using scientific data to demonstrate its feasibility.•The energy flows and H mass flows along the CLG process were analyzed in detail.
