•The internal-arc thermoelectric leg is proposed for solar thermoelectric generator.•The new leg has low thermal stress and high thermoelectric properties.•The critical power density is proposed for the evaluation of STEG.•Preference is given to the internal-arc leg for high concentration ratio.
