•Two CO2 air conditioning systems based on liquid cooled gas cooler (LCGC) were developed.•The cooling performances of direct and secondary loop systems were experimentally compared.•The effects of refrigerant charge, CO2 cycle parameters, and air-side parameters were investigated.•Exergy analysis revealed the enhancing potentials of the Chiller and evaporator.
