Internal force minimization-based adaptive beam string structure: Numerical analysis and experimental study

•An adaptive beam string structure based on internal force minimization is presented.•A downscaled model with monitoring and controlling systems is devised and fabricated.•Strategy search algorithm is created combining gradient descent & genetic algorithm.•Strategy prediction network is trained applying backpropagation learning algorithm.•Adaptation of the structure to loading is verified by simulations and experiments.
