Distribution and formation of soil balls under heavy rainstorm conditions in the northern Loess Plateau

•A new phenomenon of “soil ball” was discovered under rainstorm on the Loess Plateau.•Landslide and collapse provide the soil clods for the soil ball formation.•The hyperconcentrated flows facilitate the formation of soil balls.•Watershed shape, confluence path and peak discharge affect the distribution of soil ball downstream.
