•A systematic optimization of layer pattern in the regenerator is presented here.•A novel algorithm for this optimization is formulated and discussed for multi-layer regenerator.•Performance improvement is demonstrated with three layers of different mesh types.•Existence of an optimum combination of multi-layer regenerator for maximum COP.
