•Organic afterglow emulsion exhibiting 2.0 s phosphorescence lifetime is achieved.•The afterglow emulsion features outstanding stability against harsh environments.•The afterglow emulsion exhibits high sensitivity to detect oxygen at low concentration.•All signal changes are fully reversible under degassing and exposing-to-oxygen cycle.
