•Hydrogenation temperature affects the polymorphic composition of Mg2NiH4.•Polymorphic Mg2NiH4 is different in thermology, electricity and microstructure.•The compounds of passivation layer are Ni, Ni(OH)2, NiO, MgO and Mg(OH)2.•Ni/Ni(OH)2 and Ni/NiO in the passivation layer triggers self-evolution.
