Empathy and Physiological Synchrony

Empathy is a multi-faceted response that includes cognition, affect, and physiology. However, physiological processes have received comparatively less attention. In this study, we examined shared patterns of physiology during an empathy-inducing activity between romantic partners. We detected physiological sharing of sympathetic activity, but no consistent association with more established cognitive and affective measures of empathy.
