In the USA, the prevalence of obesity among children, adolescents, and adults has steadily increased decade after decade. Between 1999 and 2020, the prevalence of obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) among US adults aged 20 years or older increased from 30·5% to 41·9%, with the prevalence of severe obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m2) rising from 4·7% to 9·2% during the same interval. 1 Stierman B Afful J Carroll MD et al.
