•The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a key forest certification standard.•Remote sensing proved effective, affordable for measuring forest cover loss.•FSC certification did not increase forest cover in Durango, Mexico during the study.•Thus, the FSC lacks a key aim of sustainable forest management in Durango, Mexico.
