A novel atmospheric segmentation model for improving the accuracy of radiative cooling potential prediction

•Atmospheric segmentation model is proposed considering aerosol optical depth.•Proposed model improves the accuracy of radiative cooling potential prediction.•Relative error of the predicted and experimental radiative cooling potential is 2.4%.•Map of radiative cooling potential in China is derived based on the proposed model.
