•Angle-resolved photoemission on the cuprates has provided detailed knowledge of how one can understand the basic building blocks of high temperature superconductors.•Measurements on doped one-dimensional cuprates offer key tests of models meant to represent cuprate physics.•Comparison between experiments and numerical simulations on the Hubbard model reveal that extended interactions are crucially important as a base fundamental ingredient.
