•The high Cu concentrations had negative effect on growth of Magnolia and Paulsen 1103.•Excess Cu altered the functioning of photosynthetic apparatus in grapevine rootstocks.•Grapevine rootstocks showed oxidative stress in solution with high Cu concentration.•The highest Cu concentrations were observed in roots in both grapevine rootstocks.•Magnolia rootstock showed better responses to the Cu excess.
