•We trained a neural network on routine EEGs, ambulatory EEGs and a combined dataset.•The network trained with routine EEGs performed best when applied to routine EEGs.•The network trained with routine + ambulatory data performed best on ambulatory EEGs.•The type of EEG data used for training has a critical impact on algorithm performance.
